Why Physicians Need to Have an Online Identity

The healthcare profession has lagged behind not only in healthcare IT but also in utilizing existing social technology to communicate with patients. The Internet has not waited for doctors to catch up. Rather than physicians establishing their own online identities, other parties such as rate-a-physician sites have done it for them.

Message boards and rate-a-physician sites have value but at best are incomplete and may give a skewed image. By showing transparently who they are, while at the same time providing information that personally connects with and helps others, doctors, through eClinic, can take control of their own online identity.

Video Shoot with Mark Ostrem, MD

Dr. Mark Ostrem is a primary care physician and Geriatrician at Carney Hospital in Dorchester MA.  Here, he closely works with residents and participates in teaching rounds at the hospital. We appreciated his enthusiasm and generosity of time with this project.

In this series of videos, he touches on issues that are particularly important to older individuals, as well as questions we may have as our family members become older.  His thoughts on end of life care are important issues that we all should take time to consider.

Video Shoot with Lyle Micheli, MD

In December, Dr. Lyle Micheli and his staff were gracious enough to invite us to record videos at their office at Children’s Hospital in Boston.  Earlier that year I had seen Dr. Micheli give a grand rounds on sports injuries. I enjoyed the presentation very much and was impressed with Dr. Micheli’s knowledge and experience.  Even though eClinic.com was not yet completed, I thought he would be a great physician to have on the site and was delighted that he agreed.

Some of the questions presented were picked from topics covered in his books, including the Sports Medicine Bible. So if you are looking for more information on sports medicine you should check them out. Thanks again to Dr. Micheli, and to Maria Maginnis for helping to set this up, and for giving a great start to eClinic.com!
